Concrete Mix Designs
Concrete mix design is where performance, durability, constructability and cost are either won or lost. Our mix design services are built on more than 30 years of hands-on experience delivering concrete for some of Australia’s most demanding projects, across commercial, civil, infrastructure and specialist applications.
We provide independent, production-ready mix designs that are tailored to your actual materials, plant capability and project requirements — not theoretical laboratory mixes or off-the-shelf templates. The focus is on delivering mixes that batch consistently, place reliably and meet performance and durability requirements with minimal risk and rework.

1
What We Deliver
We design, review and optimise concrete mixes for a wide range of applications, including:
-
Structural concrete across all strength grades
-
Pavements and heavy-duty infrastructure
-
Piling and foundation concrete
-
Shotcrete (temporary and permanent, including steel fibre)
-
Marine and aggressive exposure environments
-
Precast and specialised project-specific mixes
Our services typically include raw material assessment, aggregate blend optimisation, cementitious and SCM selection, admixture system optimisation, strength modelling and trial mix support. Where required, we also provide compliance strategies aligned to Australian Standards and project specifications.
2
Proven Project Experience
Glenn has developed and supported mix designs for major projects including Melbourne and Brisbane Airport pavements, Bruce Highway upgrades, RAAF facilities at Darwin and Tindal, Port of Brisbane wharf extensions, Pacific Motorway upgrades, Goodwill Bridge, Inner City Bypass, and large-scale developments such as Q1, Soul, Queens Plaza and the Gabba redevelopment.
Across these projects, mix performance was critical to programme, durability and commercial outcomes. Glenn’s involvement ranged from early specification and contract review through to mix development, plant trials, production support and on-site troubleshooting.
3
Optimisation and Cost Control
A core part of the mix design service is optimisation. Glenn has extensive experience reducing variability and unnecessary cementitious content while maintaining or improving strength, durability and workability. This includes:
-
Optimising mix designs
-
Optimising aggregate grading and blend ratios
-
Improving early-age and long-term strength development
-
Managing setting behaviour across seasonal conditions
-
Improving workability retention and finishing performance
-
Reducing over-cementing and rectification risk
These optimisation programs have delivered significant cost savings and improved consistency across multi-plant operations and major project portfolios.

Practical, Independent Advice
Unlike supplier-driven mix design, our advice is independent and technically driven. We work closely with contractors, developers, councils and asset owners to develop mixes that suit the construction methodology, programme and risk profile of the project. Where performance-based solutions are appropriate, we assist in developing and justifying compliant alternatives to prescriptive specifications.
Support is available at different levels depending on your needs.
