The Construction Industry Is Changing — And So Must Our Concrete.
Today’s projects demand far more from concrete than simple strength.
Clients expect:
Consistency
Durability
Workability
Cost efficiency
Achieving these outcomes requires more than a standard mix design. It demands deep technical understanding, hands-on industry experience, and a practical appreciation of how concrete behaves — from raw material extraction and processing through batching, transport, placement, and long-term performance.
At Concrete & Geotechnical Engineering, this is precisely what we deliver.
Introducing the Directors
Concrete & Geotechnical Engineering was founded to provide independent, performance-driven materials expertise grounded in real production experience and applied engineering.
With over 30 years in concrete, aggregates, and materials engineering, Glenn Carson has built a career solving some of Australia’s most technically demanding concrete challenges through senior technical leadership roles with:
EIFERS™ — Current Engagement
ADBRI / HY-TEC — 13 Years
Holcim / Rinker / CSR Readymix — 19 Years
Working alongside Glenn is Matthew Carson, a civil and geotechnical engineer specialising in construction materials engineering, quarry product development, and performance-based material characterisation across mining and civil infrastructure sectors.
Matthew brings extensive practical experience across:
Hard rock and sand quarry development and operations
Laboratory and field testing of aggregates, soils, and concrete materials
Development and certification of quarry products to Australian Standards and state road authority specifications
Materials supply for major transport infrastructure projects including the Bruce Highway upgrade
Blending and optimisation of aggregates for concrete, asphalt, structural fill, and pavement applications
Performance-based geotechnical assessment of engineered materials
His work spans the full materials lifecycle — from resource extraction and processing through testing, compliance, and project delivery.
Together, Glenn and Matthew combine deep concrete technology expertise with production-scale materials engineering and geotechnical performance assessment.
Our work today spans:
Mix design and optimisation
Materials R&D and technical investigations
Batching and QA system improvement
Quarry product development and compliance
Geotechnical and construction materials engineering
Technical support for complex civil and infrastructure projects
Real-World Engineering That Delivers Results
From Resource to Placement — Engineering the Entire System
Concrete performance begins long before batching. Aggregate quality, grading control, fines behaviour, moisture variability, and processing methods all directly influence mix behaviour and structural performance.
Our capability extends from quarry production through mix design and placement, allowing us to translate specifications into predictable, repeatable outcomes.
Across major sites including Melbourne Airport and large infrastructure projects, we have:
Reduced cementitious content while maintaining performance
Improved strength consistency and durability
Enhanced finishing and placement behaviour
Developed mixes tailored to real site constraints and environmental conditions
Optimised aggregate grading through production-level control
Concrete does not exist in isolation — and neither do our designs.
Case Study:
Glenn and Matthew have worked on many major projects over their careers including:
Tindal RAAF Project Summary ✈️ - Northern Territory, Australia
Long‑Distance, Long‑Life Concrete Innovation – Alice Springs, Northern Territory, Australia
Tugun Bypass Tunnel – Innovative Long‑Life Piling Mix – Gold Coast, Australia
Townsville Bank Vault – Super‑Workable Concrete Innovation – Far North Queensland, Australia
Q1 Gold Coast – High‑Rise Concrete Engineering at a New Scale – Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia
Newport Weir — High-Workability Continuous-Lift Concrete – Queensland, Australia
Bruce Highway Upgrade – Cooroy to Curra, Queensland, Australia
These projects demonstrate the value of engineering concrete as a complete system — not simply specifying strength.
Projects at this scale demand rigorous materials engineering, specification control, and production consistency — all under real commercial pressure.
Materials Engineering in Practice — Major Infrastructure Supply
Concrete performance depends on the quality and consistency of the materials that go into it.
Driving Commercial Outcomes Through Technical Expertise
Technical work must improve commercial performance — and that is exactly what we deliver.
Key outcomes include:
Rapid growth of regional concrete operations through mix optimisation
Multimillion-dollar EBIT improvements from targeted R&D programs
Reduced production variability and batching error
Lower material cost through aggregate optimisation and cement reduction
Improved specification compliance and risk control
Every technical improvement must deliver measurable value.
Research & Development That Matters
Our R&D programs focus on applied engineering challenges, including:
Pavement response under moving loads
Column shortening prediction
Early-age cracking risk
Low-shrinkage flat-floor mix development
Long-life pile concrete design
Field versus laboratory shrinkage behaviour
Alternative material performance in structural concrete
Aggregate mineralogy and durability behaviour
Material performance under real placement conditions
This is not theoretical research — it is engineering designed for implementation.
Quality Systems That Protect Your Project
Production variability is one of the greatest risks to concrete performance.
We strengthen technical systems by:
Improving batching accuracy and process control
Implementing LIMS-based quality tracking
Ensuring AS 1379 compliance
Reducing material variability
Enhancing production reliability
Better systems produce predictable concrete.
Why Clients Choose Us
Because we do not just design concrete —
we engineer performance from resource to structure.
Our approach delivers:
Lower material costs
Improved constructability
Greater durability and service life
Reduced defects and rework
Technical confidence from tender through placement
We bring clarity, control, and accountability to concrete performance.
